My Students

As a teacher in a high poverty district, my students come into the classroom with many challenges. Learning reading and writing skills has been especially difficult for my students. Their access to meaningful and challenging works of literature has been limited. However, something that has helped to bridge the gap in their understanding is the graphic novel.

My students love to read comic books, and pairing words with pictures helps to increase my students inference skills and helps them to become invested in what they are reading.

I love comics, too. As a teacher, I see first hand how comics help to increase my students love of reading.

My Project

Having a library of graphic novel adaptations of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, will enable my students to access these classic works in a manner that is engaging and meaningful to them. Students will use these graphic novels to gain an understanding of plot, character motivations, foreshadowing, and irony. Also, by pairing Shakespeare's story with pictures, students who struggle with inferences will be able to gain knowledge of plot details. Further, students will use these graphic novels as a guide for creating their own illustrated adaptations of these plays.

This project will significantly help my students because it will allow them to access difficult material in a manner that is comfortable and engaging to them.

These graphic novels will help to increase the level of student engagement in my classroom, while also helping to increase students' desire to read.
