Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Film allows us the view the world through the lens of other perspectives. The best movies share these points of view with camera angles, light, characters, and more. In my Film as Literature: Cinematic Analysis class, high school students of different ages get the opportunity to learn about these elements. This is the first time this course is being taught at this Los Angeles school, which primarily caters to Latinx immigrant populations. As a result, we have historically deprioritized the arts to focus on core classes. Since this is the first time exposing our students to the beauty of art in film, our lack of equipment has led to a passive interaction with cinematic elements.

My inspired students look for the opportunity to not only analyze film techniques, but to apply them in their own stories.

With your support, we can use the appropriate tools needed for a true analysis and application of storytelling. By using the right techniques, my students would get the rare chance to be as creative as needed in order to be the best filmmakers they can be.

My Project

All the best cinematographers convey mood or emphasis on characters or setting via lighting. However, many students have trouble conceptualizing this knowledge by just watching movies.

With the use of physical lights, my students will get a

hands-on opportunity to understand cinematic elements and to simply have fun with film, instead of doing another passive activity of analyzing someone else's techniques. Not only will they have to use the lights to demonstrate understanding, but also use them to show their own original ideas. I want to give my students the chance to have fun creating something new, something they do not ordinarily get the chance to do in their academic classes. By using the lights, they will apply what they have learned by using top lighting to emphasize subjects or back-lighting to create specific atmospheres--whatever they wish to get their own personal perspectives across in film.
