Help Ms. D'Amato

I am a 2nd grade teacher in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch. Since the first day of school this year I have been paying close attention to the books that my students seem to really enjoy reading. In addition to monitoring what reading level they are on, I like to stay on top of what my students are interested in reading. I want reading to be fun and relevant for the kids so that they don't view reading as a chore. This seems to be working as many of my students do a quick little cheer when I tell them it's reading time. Also, most students eagerly sign out a book from our classroom library to read at home on a daily basis. I would like to keep my students enthused about reading, and in order to do that I need to provide them with some new material. I've noticed that my students really enjoy the writing styles of authors David Shannon, Lauren Child, and Dr. Seuss. I would like to provide the students with more books from authors whose work they enjoy. I tell the kids that one way to choose an appropriate book is to choose another book from an author whose book(s) you have previously read and enjoyed. The problem with this is that I don't really have enough books in our library for them to use that technique. As adults we often use this technique in order to choose a book, so I'd like my students to be able to employ this skill as well. I hear one of my below-grade level readers reading "David Goes to School" every single day over and over to himself. He loves the book, and that's great. However, I'd love to be able to provide him with some additional reading material to enjoy.
