Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For the last nine years I have had the privilege of teaching Social Studies to terrific kids at a public middle school in New York City. I work with 120 students each day. 82% of my school’s population is eligible for free or reduced lunches. Families are struggling. They are doing their best to keep up with their children’s educational needs, but it has become increasingly difficult to do so in these difficult financial times. The students need to see their work product! They work hard producing quality essays, reports and research papers, but they don’t get to see what they have produced. While many of my students have computers with word processing capabilities in their homes, they lack resources for their printers to print their work. Ink and paper are expensive. My students regularly copy their work onto a disc and turn it in. I do not have a printer in my classroom and there is no designated printer in the school that the students can use to print their completed work. I want my students to experience pride in their work product- because it is well designed and written AND because it looks good. It is important for my students and for others to see what they have produced. Additionally, my classes are engaged in a school centennial project as our building is nearly 100 years old. We have hit a stumbling block. We need to scan and print photographs of our community from books, newspapers and private collections. We need to print the current contrast photos we have taken. The students will be creating an exhibit for the school community. A printer with scanning capabilities will accomplish this goal. By donating to this project you will be giving students the chance to feel true pride in their work by giving them the opportunity to see their finished and printed work products.
