Help Mrs. Mays

My Students

My classroom of 9 students has one iPod touch that we use constantly. There are so many aps that help my students with autism communicate and learn, but we can only help one student at a time currently. The kids become so engaged when using the iPod but there isn't enough to go around currently.

My classroom is a self contained special education classroom within a public elementary school.

It is a class for students with moderate and severe disabilities. All of my students have autism and intellectual disabilities, most of them are nonverbal or minimally verbal and have trouble expressing their wants and needs. I have two paraprofessionals who assist me and they are wonderful. My students are typically with me from kindergarten through 5th grade, which can be 7 or 8 years when you consider retention. I develop close bonds with "my kids" and celebrate all of their progress and successes, big and small. Seeing them all engage and learn SO much just from using our single iPod approximately 30 minutes per day each has truly inspired me and I would love to give them each more of an opportunity to use the device more often to communicate, understand their environment, and learn new skills!

My Project

Can you imagine going from having no voice to being able to ask for a drink, snack, break, or hug? My students use communication aps on the one iPod we have currently to tell me what they want or need - and they're more inclined to use the iPod than their traditional communication devices. People with autism have social deficits and don't typically respond to other people - but they tend to love electronics. My students pay so much better attention to iPod aps designed to teach letters/numbers/animals/etc. than they do to traditional flashcards or books. They become engaged, active participants in their learning in a way I don't usually see. Currently I have 9 to 10 students sharing one iPod which doesn't allow much time per child. Ideally I would love for each student to have their own, but for now I would like to have two more - one for each adult in the classroom, so that we can teach, supervise and assist the students when using them .

Students with autism are notoriously "hard-to-reach", due to their communication and social deficits.

When I find a way to successfully reach one of my students, it is a big deal. The one iPod we have in our classroom has given me a way to reach ALL of my students in a way that helps them communicate, understand, and learn. But only for about a half hour a day, then it's someone else's turn to use it. Having two more would allow me to reach each child three times as much! Which is a HUGE step!
