My Students

"At the heart of effective technology integration, technology offers opportunities to be more actively involved in the learning experience." -- Vanessa Vega, Edutopia I believe that the best way to integrate core skills into technology is through hands-on experiences!

I teach at a magnet school in Stamford, Connecticut.

We are a school that has grown exponentially in even the few short years since I have been here! Since 2008, we have gone from 475 students, to close to 800 students currently. With our ever-growing population, we are ever-adjusting to meet the needs of our many new students. My group of students this year is made up of 24 children. The most prominent language spoken in my classroom is Spanish, but most of my students are still learning English. I try to incorporate differentiated language activities into every moment of my day. Despite the many differences that they have, my students come in eager and ready to start each day with smiles on their faces. They love school, and I love to embrace that by offering them engaging, fun activities to complete while still learning and growing!

My Project

My students use iPads daily during our center time. During reading , phonics and math, we use them to practice grade-level skills using research-based programs. My students can even record themselves reading, and any teacher will tell you how valuable that is! These tools really help my students learn and grow! Unfortunately, with the strong demands of computer-based testing, my students have been forced to give up the iPads in order for the "big kids" (3-5 graders) to use them for testing. As a result, we spend the better portion of the year without iPads in the room. We need one iPad and case. My goal is to have a class set of five iPads funded for our continual use throughout the year, so my students are never without quality technology resources. These research-based programs are fantastic for both helping my students, and tracking their growth. In a data-driven school system, they are invaluable.

The addition of these resources to my classroom will mean a constant technology center within the room, that cannot be taken away due to lack of technology elsewhere.

My students will have daily opportunities to interact with fun, engaging activities that will make them better readers, writers, and mathematicians. It is my hope that this will create 21st century learners, who are never afraid of using technology to better themselves.
