My Students

Today's student has had access to technology from a very young age, with one exception....at school. We should meet students where they are, not where we are, we should seek out things that interest them and use those avenues to reach our students. Technology can be one of our greatest assets.

I have a wide variety of students in my classroom, ranging from Gifted and Talented to English Language Learners to those with special needs.

I teach at a Title 1 elementary school in a small, South Texas town. Most of the students on my campus are on free and reduced lunch. We also have several foster children, as well as children adopted out of the foster care system. My students do not have a means of review and practice afforded them other than those that I provide in my classroom.

My Project

My students respond well when we are able to use technology in our lessons, sadly however we don't have a great deal of technology that the students can interact with on their own. A great majority of my students dislike Math, because they have struggled to retain skills and information due to it being presented in a way that does not connect with them. An iPad would allow be near boundless ways in which to present content. There are hundreds of educational apps that I could use to reach students, including games, or apps where I could record lessons to be played back as needed. I can use an iPad in centers where I could adapt it to each child individually by assigning them a certain app to work on or by using apps that adapt to the user. I could even use the iPad to allow my students to produce projects that demonstrate their understanding of topics or extend what we have already learned. An iPad opens up hundreds of engaging ways for my students to receive and practice content.

In the state of Texas all 5th grade students must pass their state exam in order to advance to the 6th grade.

I, as the teacher, have to use every tool at my disposal to reach my students. Sadly, however, sometimes that is not enough. This iPad would allow me to engage my students authentically, which is the key to the retention of information. My students this year would not benefit alone, but students for years to come would also benefit from having more technology made available to them.
