Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever seen a student roll their eyes or moan when told to take out a book to read, or do some research? My class is bright and wants to learn, but when it comes to reading or doing research, they are difficult to motivate. I know when I make education fun, they are much more eager to learn.

I have nearly 50 6th graders.

I teach Language Arts and History. We are a Title I school and this is our 2nd year having 6th grade classes. With budget cuts, our school is limited in what we can buy. Our 6th grade classes don't have appropriate grade level library books. Our school only has books for grades K-5. My students need to get their reading material from the local public library, and most of them have not even set foot in one. When it comes to literacy, I have many students who need more practice, but they are embarrassed to read because they are afraid of being teased. What better way to ignite their learning than by using technology and connecting it to literature and research. I want my students to be engaged and excited about reading a book. My goal is to help students develop a love for reading. Having Kindle Fires would literally put thousands of opportunities at their fingertips!

My Project

Having 2 Kindle Fires will allow me to work in a small group with the students who are struggling in reading. A nice thing about the Kindle is that no one other than the reader and I would know what level a student is reading. This would build confidence for those who need more practice, as well as avoid the embarrassment of not being at the same reading level as other students in the class. One of the best features is that you can enlarge the print. This feature makes it easier for students to read and not have to squint to see the words. Also, I wouldn't have to reorder books because they're torn or worn out. The Kindle Fire is amazing; it can literally put thousands of books in the hands of my students. With the Kindle Fire's ability to access the Internet, my students would be able to research current events, as well as obtain more information than is available in their textbooks. Technology is everywhere, except at our school. We are always a step behind and trying to catch up.

With your support and generous donations you would be helping my students become better readers, better researchers and better thinkers.

I feel the possibilities are endless with a Kindle Fire and hopefully the fire will be in you to help us out!
