My Students

I teach third grade at a public school in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. I have 27 amazingly diverse students. Our school is progressive and believes that students learn best using a hands-on appropriate to learning. We have an exciting curriculum that is largely project based, in addition to STEM projects. However, this often requires much research and reading in order for students to build contact knowledge on the topics they study.

Teaching the students to read nonfiction text In Scholastic News magazines always generates interest, conversation, and debate in our classroom.

With a variety of text structures, video clips, and follow up activities, Scholastic News builds excitement and background knowledge for students on current events.

My Project

These weekly nonfiction Scholastic News magazines will continue to enhance the love of reading with captivating current events and skill-building instruction that support our Reading, Writing Arts, Science, and Social Studies curricula.

With these weekly Scholastic magazines, my students will be empowered with the lifelong knowledge and skills they'll need to become informed, active citizens in a diverse world.

Written just for third graders, Scholastic News brings kid-friendly current events into our classroom! Every issue features on-level informational texts that meet today’s grade level standards, and online resources like digital issues, Text-to-Speech audio, videos, Spanish translations, and so much more.

Students will also be able to choose articles that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these weekly Scholastic magazines will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students love independent reading! This project will help create an exciting classroom environment that engages students, fosters collaboration, and ignites discovery in reading.
