Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Perhaps, as a young child, your mom or your teacher read you 'If You Give a Mouse a Cookie'. Did you know that there is a whole series of 'If You Give...' books? My first grade students loved the original book. It would be great if they could read all of the 'If You Give...' titles.

I teach at a school in Florida.

There are over twenty students in my first grade class. I specialize in educating children with limited English proficiency. Almost all of my students are Hispanic. The children love story-time and are very fond of 'If You Give a Mouse a Cookie...' This is a fun story with great illustrations - and very useful for getting the students to use their imagination and to make lively predictions. They children would love to read all of the books in the 'If You Give...' series.

My Project

These are: 'If You Give a Mouse a Cookie...', 'If You Give a Cat a Cupcake...', 'If You Give a Dog a Donut...', 'If You Give a Moose a Muffin...', If You Give Pig a Pancake...' and 'If You Give a Pig a Party...'. Don't the titles alone just make you want to read them? If you do an image search on any of these titles, you'll see how beguiling the illustrations are, too. I know that my children will adore these books! These books also help to stretch the students' imaginations. Children always like to predict what's going to happen when we turn the page, but the 'If You Give...' series, which describe a series of stranger and stranger consequences to the action in the title, really play with and challenge students' powers of prediction.

My students need exposure to engaging children's literature and, after reading them 'If You Give a Mouse a Cookie...', I am sure that they would fall over themselves to read the other titles in this series.

My students don't have much access to English-language story books at home. Please help to enliven our lessons by providing the children with these wonderful story books!
