My students are musically gifted starting at an early age. They come in the door eager to sing, dance, move and play instruments each day. The younger students love to get their hands on as many classroom instruments as possible including xylophones, drums, rhythms sticks, tambourines, triangles....you name it! Older students learn to perform in ensembles and continue to develop their music reading aptitude by learning to play the recorder and ukulele.
While our students come from many different cultural backgrounds, music is a universal language that connects us.
I want to expose my students to as many different musical instruments as possible that will provide a lifetime of artistic expression.
As my students learn about the history of the area in which they live, I would like to provide an experience with one of the instruments used in the mountain region of our state. There is a quote by Carl Orff that is important to remember: "Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand." My plan is to involve students in learning how to play the dulcimer so that they can experience a little of our history and also be able to share it with others through performance.
Our students do live in a high poverty area and face many daily challenges.
However, students have found a positive outlet for expressing themselves and gaining self confidence through music performance. I will be using the dulcimers during class time as well as forming a before school dulcimer practice group that will perform school-wide.
