Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are seen one way by outsiders and an entirely different way from the staff. Outsiders see them as trouble makers who are lazy and caught up in bad things. Our staff sees them as people whose lives have been wrought with a multitude of obstacles, fear, abuse and neglect that made learning a low priority next to surviving. We see people of strength who recognized that a traditional school was not a great fit, who did not drop out and instead, made their way to our school of 125 students and seven teachers who work tirelessly to help them see their potential, feel valued and help them to reach their goals of graduation while highlighting real and achievable avenues to take them into the work force so they can see a way out of their current situation and a way of independence in their future.

My Project

My school is unique for many reasons. One thing that is different is that students are not allowed to bring anything to campus. No backpacks, no pens, nothing. This is a safety issue as this school is a place for students who did not fair well in a traditional setting and here, they can have a shot at an education in a smaller, more controlled environment. The way we deal with this rule is when students walk in to class, they each have a binder that we provide which stays in the classroom. The first five minutes of class often feels wasted as they are gathering the items they need for the day. This project allows me to have a pencil case in every student binder with the basics we use: pen, pencil, eraser, sticky notes, glue stick, blunt scissors, and highlighters. I feel that if they come in with a fully stocked binder, we are no longer wasting precious minutes doling out what they need and collecting it at the end of the period. Not only will this be a timesaver but I think the kids will really like feeling like they have everything they need the moment they come in.
