This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a Title I school teacher for the past 15 years, I’ve observed that many of my students don’t always have access to breakfast at home and depend on the school for their first meal of the day. Despite this, they often experience drops in energy and focus as the day progresses. It’s not uncommon for my current and former students to visit my classroom asking for a snack, water, or even a piece of candy to help them stay alert during lessons.

After recognizing this need, I began purchasing snacks myself and sharing them with students throughout the day.

Sometimes, I even buy sandwiches and split them in half so they can have something to eat between classes. These snacks serve a dual purpose—they give students an energy boost and also motivate them to refocus on their studies, rather than being distracted by hunger.

The resources I’m requesting, such as healthy snacks and water, will make a tangible difference in my students' ability to concentrate and participate in class. By having access to these essentials, students can maintain their stamina, stay engaged, and get the most out of their learning experiences.

What makes my students special is their resilience. Many of them face food insecurity and other challenges outside of school, yet they show up eager to learn. My goal for this project is to provide them with the basic support they need to thrive academically, ensuring that hunger isn’t a barrier to their success.
