Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Alguna vez has deseado ser fluido en otro idioma que no sea Ingles? Did you get through that or did you struggle? If you struggled then you just put yourself in the shoes of the 377 second language learners that we service at our high school.

Our ESL students come from varying parts of the world, with varying stories.

Currently, we serve students that speak seven different languages. Some have already graduated from their own country's high school, but are too young to not live in the US and attend school. We serve students who come to us as sixteen year olds, but haven't attended school in their home country since they were ten...the age in which they can legally drop out. However, our kids are resilient. They are placed in a fast track language immersion program that allows them to acquire the basics of English before they are exited to a sheltered or Special ESL class. The point is to make them as comfortable with our social norms and our language as possible before they are exited out.

My Project

The tablets that are donated would be used to help our New Arrival Center students learn the basics of English in a way that is universal, technology. Despite the differences in many countries economies or cultural norms, technology is either universally adopted or acquired very quickly once they get to the US. Students will be allowed to translate their thoughts and writings with their teachers, so that knowledge attainment can be certain. Students can express their concept attainment through things like video editing and artistically developed pictures. Students can record themselves speaking then replay, review and rehearse. Our students will strive with this resource.

It may come across as far reaching, but I believe that the donation of these two tablets will allow for our students to feel safe and comfortable in their new country.

It will provide them the opportunity to communicate effectively with their teachers and to practice the skills they need to feel successful. It will help make them more confident in their accent and their word choices. I believe that it will open them up for every chance possible to make it in the country in which they now live.
