This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students have become discouraged and think that their current state is their permanent state. I want to revive that desire to learn, explore, and experiment with their future. Help us explore the vast array of entrepreneurial opportunities in the world. Our first stop is fashion.
My students attend a school where more than 90% of them receive free lunch and reside below the poverty level.
They are latchkey kids and parents to their younger siblings. But even with all of those challenges, they are a group of talented and inquisitive kids. They are eager to learn and want to branch out beyond their "hoods".
My Project
This particular project will open my students' eyes to the vast possibilities for their futures. Most of their favorite celebrities have fashion lines, and I would like for them to explore some creative careers. Students will not only learn the basics of fashion design, but they will also learn what it takes to start a business and how to present those ideas to potential investors.
By the end of this project, students will have created a business name, logo, marketing strategy, and a piece from their line. They will use the craft fabric, fabric scraps, and scissors to create original outfits from their designs. My students will learn how to take a design from concept to reality, using a few simple supplies, like fabric and scissors.
My students need a creative outlet, and they need to know that they have options.
I think this project, which will be a part of a series, will broaden their horizons and get them excited about learning and their futures.
