My Students

I work as an Occupational Therapist in an offsite public elementary school in NYC that caters to the academic learning of children with special needs. Our students are fun-loving, curious and motivated to learn and grow. Many of the children have been in classes together since Kindergarten, creating many interesting, sibling-like relationships. They both support and challenge each other every day.

Most of my students in the school have disabilities that make it difficult for them to access classroom materials.

They are very involved students and they need as much support as they can get in order to access everyday learning tools and class instruction. A lot of our students do not have chairs that provide adequate support for learning.

All our students love coming to school because here, they see their friends and teachers. They play and learn with their peers and together they grow in a safe and nurturing environment. In each classroom, we try to be creative and use different medium of learning. Despite the current situation, we try to make school life fun and meaningful.

My Project

My students must have the basic requirement to effective learning in a classroom, which are chairs that provide them with adequate support and comfort. My students are very eager to learn and participate in class activities, but without proper sitting this would be difficult for them. I want them to be comfortable and at ease so that they can pay attention to their teachers and peers instead of worrying about sitting safely in their seats. I believe that when provided with appropriate positioning, they will be able to appreciate the classroom activities and will be more confident to participate in them.
