This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Engaging the minds of middle school students is difficult! I teach English language arts at a high-needs middle school in the South Bronx. Many of my students are dealing with extreme personal and challenging family situations, and so academics are not always their first priority. Therefore, whenever my students show an interest in a particular topic or activity, I try to run with it and provide for them as best I can.

However, to fully interact with the program, and to reap the most benefits, headphones are needed in order to listen to the online lessons; being "plugged in" also helps to minimize distractions from other elements in the classroom.

Buying multiple pairs of headphones on a teaching salary is daunting - please help!

Despite proclaiming an aversion to reading at the start of the school year, I have been able to soften (most) of my student's feelings with the use of technology in our classroom. Once a week, my students work on literacy lessons through the use of iReady. They are hooked and I need to continue the momentum despite lack of supplies.

Some pairs are being held together with tape; a few have broken beyond repair. As a result, my students' interest in iReady, and thus in reading in general, is beginning to waver. At the moment, some students are able use the supplies that are available, and truly take advantage of the reading time given to them; unfortunately, students for whom no headphones remain must work in a less conducive environment. In order to continue student engagement and encourage life-long reading habits, I am asking for the donation of a class set of headphones so that all of my students are given equal opportunity to both strengthen their skills and reap the benefits of reading.
