Icelandic Voices

My students need travel garment bags to protect their tuxedos and dresses while traveling. Our Concert Choir will be traveling by plane to Iceland and coach bus to our concert venues.

My Students

My students are high school freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors from a diverse range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. For many, this is the first time traveling overseas. Payton’s Concert Choir is comprised of students who have extensive choral experience and an intensive love of choral singing.

Each member of our group was selected for this trip based on their audition and acceptance into Payton’s Concert Choir without consideration of their ability to contribute to the trip’s fees.

All 52 students meet as a class to explore advanced choral singing skills and choral literature as well as music history, theory, and sight singing. The Concert Choir performs in school and community events throughout the school year and also attends CPS and Illinois State competitions. Students must audition to be in the choir.

Our concert choir students are diligent, creative, and energetic. In addition to bringing our music to Iceland, we are excited to leave our metropolitan surroundings to engage in the unique Icelandic environment. During our time preparing for the trip, our students are organizing presentations and leading class discussions during which they research and share elements of Icelandic culture, landscapes, and geography.

My Project

This project is important to our choir because we value the importance of understanding the culture behind the songs that we sing.

This choir tour emphasizes how music is a universal language and can be understood and shared all around the world, regardless of language and culture barriers.

We will have the opportunity to sing with a Icelandic choir and sing at traditional Icelandic venues which will give us a taste of musical tradition there. We hope to bring back what we learn about the universal language of choral music to the States, and share our music through a Spring performance.
