About My Students

Annie, Ferran, and Ananya are the student leaders of this project. They have been in Concert Choir for three years, and were lucky enough to travel with Payton's Concert Choir to Argentina in 2016. Their passion for singing has made them want to share their voices with the world.

Our concert choir students are diligent, creative, and energetic. In addition to bringing our music to Iceland, we are excited to leave our metropolitan surroundings to engage in the unique Icelandic environment. During our time preparing for the trip, our students are organizing presentations and leading class discussions during which they research and share elements of Icelandic culture, landscapes, and geography.

Each member of our group was selected for this trip based on their audition and acceptance into Payton’s Concert Choir without consideration of their ability to contribute to the trip’s fees. They are high school freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors from a diverse range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. For many, this is the first time traveling overseas. Payton’s Concert Choir is comprised of students who have extensive choral experience and an intensive love of choral singing.

This project is important to our choir because we feel a duty to understand the culture behind the songs that we sing. This choir tour emphasizes how music is a universal language and can be understood and shared all around the world, regardless of language and culture barriers. We will have the opportunity to sing with a Icelandic choir and sing at traditional Icelandic venues, which will help us understand Icelandic musical traditions. We plan to bring back what we learn about the universal language of choral music to the States and share our music through a Spring performance.

This trip is an incredible opportunity for us to strengthen our determination and teamwork skills and to broaden our worldview, on top of building the very practical skills of fundraising, giving presentations, and reflecting on personal experience.

In Their Own Words

This trip will give us the opportunity to further our musicianship and share our voices, working with an Icelandic choir and professionals in the music industry there. Our goal is to share the joy of our music and song with a new culture and to share what we learn when we return home.

As senior members of the Concert Choir, we have helped to organize this trip. We have formed groups and chosen different aspects of Iceland to study and present to the choir. Furthermore, as students, we have taken initiative in the fundraising efforts. The choir has washed cars, sold cookie dough, and two students have even hosted cabaret nights.

We are trying to send a group of 50 wonderful student singers to Iceland! Many of our choir members have never left the country before, therefore, this trip represents not only a unique musical endeavor, but a once in a lifetime opportunity for them. Therefore we need to raise a whopping $40,000 to cover the expenses of housing, air travel, excursions, meals, etc. for this trip. This choir tour will allow our members to further their musicianship, make us global citizens, and open our eyes to a new culture.
