My students need burettes for titration labs in both their Sophomore Chemistry Honors course and their IB Chemistry course.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Capasso's classroom raised $574
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students are a diverse group of bright young scholars from all over the NYC area, most of whom are first- and second-generation Americans, attending a competitive Title I school in Brooklyn, NY. Our school uses the International Baccalaureate's diploma program as a way to develop students' abilities across disciplines at a very high level and foster well-rounded individuals. We are an "IB For All" school which means that we fully cover the cost of the IB program - usually only available to private school students or a select group in public schools - so that all our students can achieve college readiness. My students often balance rigorous academics with a lot of responsibilities at home supporting their families all while maintaining a positive attitude and desire to learn.
My Project
Titrations are not only an essential component of any good Chemistry lab syllabus but also a great way to learn science through hands-on inquiry. Through titrations, not only can my students learn about acid-base chemistry but also oxidation and reduction. They can practice their quantitative skills by putting the stoichiometry they have learned to use in real life. They are able to explore and learn more about common items they use in their every day life! Chemistry has come to life as students in the past have explored acidity of fresh squeezed orange juice versus store bought orange juice or whether different brands of cereal contain different amounts of iron. When the indicators change colors at the end point of the titration, the students often scream with delight!
Unfortunately, our current burettes are old and unsafe and have resulted in lab spills of acid and base and need to be retired.
We currently do not have enough money in our budget to replace them and risk not being able to perform any titrations in the 2018-2019 school year without your help.
With your donation, we will be replacing our old burettes with new, safe equipment that will allow my students to perform these experiments in a controlled environment. All of our Sophomores take Chemistry and it is their first experience in a wet lab. Many of our Juniors and Seniors - future scientists - also chose to take IB Chemistry and need this equipment for their Senior internal assessment lab project. Please help us continue to make science come alive for these amazing young people. Thank you!
