My Students

My students are a diverse group of bright young scholars from all over the NYC area, most of whom are first- and second-generation Americans, attending a competitive Title I school in Brooklyn, NY. Our school uses the International Baccalaureate's diploma program as a way to develop students' abilities across disciplines at a very high level and foster well-rounded individuals. We are an "IB For All" school which means that we fully cover the cost of the IB program - usually only available to private school students or a select group in public schools - so that all our students can achieve college readiness. My students often balance rigorous academics with a lot of responsibilities at home supporting their families all while maintaining a positive attitude and desire to learn.

My Project

My Seniors in IB Biology have been working for four hard years leading up to their final lab project - the International Baccalaureate's internal assessment for Group IV. This is a full lab that they have designed on their own over the summer and throughout the fall. So much research has gone into these projects and the students are eagerly awaiting the day when they can collect their data.

Unfortunately, the Department of Education has cut our budget this year and do not have the means to purchase many of the chemicals the students need.

Students are faced with a heart-wrenching decision to either start from scratch and use whatever we have leftover in the lab, buy their chemicals on their own (something above the means for most students), or start from scratch and completely re-write their lab to include household items readily available.

It breaks my heart to see these student having poured so much effort into their labs have to start over, with less enthusiasm for their new projects. Please help us get the chemicals and equipment needed to help them complete their investigations.
