Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 9th-11th-grade students are resourceful and expressive artists. This year they are taking Painting, Drawing, and 3D Design. Most of the students I work with speak English as a second language—more than 80% come from homes where Spanish is their primary language—and 20% require Special Education services for emotional and/or learning challenges. More than 80% of students qualify for free lunch, which is an indicator of living in poverty. Our first graduating class will be in 2018 and it is our goal to graduate 100% of our students and to ensure they have multiple pathways to succeed in the future. That’s a mighty task since New York City’s graduation rates are low, particularly for its most vulnerable learners. My students need resources for quality Arts Education that and can help break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectation in northern Manhattan!

My Project

As the visual and media arts teacher for the high school, I can assure you that my students need and will use these digital cameras for a range of projects and explorations.

My classes are about empowering students through art.

The digital cameras will allow my students to express themselves in meaningful ways, to be recognized for their creativity and interests, and to document their work overtime for portfolio development and college admission. Many of my students struggle in other academic areas, especially our English language learners, and these are the children who often find success in the arts. In my art classes, students are provided with new avenues for expressing who they are, how they see the world, and what they aspire to be.

I love to recycle and teach my students the importance of reuse in our society. We will be documenting a community garden project as well as other collaborations this school year.
