Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I am a fifth and sixth grade inclusion teacher at a highly disadvantaged public school in the Bronx. My class focuses on, and relies heavily on, any technology possible. Many of our computers and equipment dates back to over a decade ago. Audio-visual technology is virtually nonexistent. Because I teach inclusion, I have 60% of my students in general education and the other 40% in special education. This means I have a wide range of learners! Some of my students read on a Kindergarten/1st grade level while others are reading on their proper grade level. Interestingly, the majority of my students are auditory learners. They build comprehension the fastest when they hear information. Most of my students absolutely LOVE to be read to. They are hooked when inflection makes a book come alive, and they develop their vocabulary by listening and responding to books in class discussion. I am currently reading “To Kill A Mockingbird” to my class. After today's reading, many of my nonreaders were on the edge of their seats, begging for me to read just one more page! Some of the more advanced readers in this class are ready to analyze books with more challenging vocabulary words. Unfortunately, I am never able to sufficiently meet the needs of each learner due to our challenging curriculum and our time constraints. I would like to start a "Books on Tape" center in my classroom library where students can listen to the audio versions of their favorite books while following along with the hard copy. This will require tape decks with multiple headphone hook-ups so that several students can use the “Books on Tape” center simultaneously. It will also require a library of their favorite books on tape. All of my students will have rotating access to the "Books on Tape" center. My big goal is for each student to discover the magic of reading a good book. For many, that requires getting over a fear of language and print. With a "Books on Tape" audio center, students will be able to stop their tape and listen again to build comprehension. Furthermore, they can listen to authors reading their own work with exciting inflection that allows the characters, setting, plot and theme to take shape. Please help me make literature come alive for my students today!
