Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I wish you had been there!" Beyond the occasional formal performance that my students present, there is beautiful learning found in the every day. The ability to record musical moments and verbal responses using student friendly digital microphones will help students quantify and share learning.

My school is in many ways like any other Title 1 school; we have a high number of students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Also like many schools, the majority of our student population is learning English as a second language. Even my students whose home language is English need language support. It is typical for the verbal responses of my students to be monosyllabic. Speaking is the precursor to reading, and what better way to practice speech than through singing? When singing my students develop language and they are filled with fun and effort so they don't know they are working hard. The joy of singing together draws out even the most reluctant and self-conscious language learner. Nothing thrills my students more than when they can sing their song of the day to their teacher on the way out of class because they have worked hard and accomplished something wonderfully aesthetic, and they have a need to share the beauty they've created together.

My Project

I am asking for the "Easi-speak digital microphone bundle." This set comes with 5 hand-held digital USB microphones and USB hub. Designed for children, the buttons are big and simple. Each microphone stores 4 hours of data which can be exported as either a .WAV or an MP3 file. This tool will revolutionize my class. The microphones will allow me to not only assess individual students more quickly, but I'll also have a record of their performance that I can refer to later. With headphones, these microphones also become self-evaluation tools as students listen to themselves. I look forward to helping students develop their language as they verbally respond to all sorts of musical prompts. When I have small groups working on a project, I can give them a microphone to use to record their conversation. The best part will be taking student work outside our classroom. Displaying individual student work will no longer be limited to pencil and paper but will include hyperlinks or a CD.

This project will give my students the opportunity to create something tangible out of something that is temporal.

Music is something we share and since not everyone can be in our class, it is important that we give the students the chance to take their learning outside the walls. When children have the chance to share something they are good at with others, the things that are more difficult seem less so. Something we do well is always worth celebrating.
