My Students

Have you ever finished a great book and wished you could write like the author? Mentor texts give students models of great writing and inspire them to try strategies that real authors use in their own pieces of writing.

I teach a fabulous group of fifth grade students.

My students come from a Title I school in a rural area of South Carolina. Many of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and they range greatly in ability and experiences. My kids are an energetic group who love to laugh, grow, and learn. Their wisdom, courage, and energy amazes and inspires me on a daily basis. Writing is my absolute favorite subject to teach and I am often amazed by the creative and humorous stories that my students write. It is my goal to teach them to love writing and to be confident in their ability to write

My Project

My students will grow as writers with the addition of this set of mentor texts to our classroom. We are in need of a set of texts that we can use to examine published works across the genres that we study. In our Writing Workshop, we talk about the process real writers go through when working on a book and model our own writing after these experts. Through daily exposure to high-quality mentor texts, my students will gain perspective on how to craft stories that both hook and keep the reader interested. My hope is that by exposing my students to great examples of professional writing, they will learn to model their own writing after that of published authors.
