With my 3rd grade students, I strive to create an exciting learning environment where reading and learning to love reading are at the center. My school is in a high-needs, inner city community and learning is often impacted by a lack of resources.

To become creative and critical thinkers, my students need access to the world around them. They love reading about current events and other nonfiction articles, and learning how to relate information to their lives and community. Reading and interpreting nonfiction are key parts of our curriculum, but we have fewer resources at our disposal.

Kids magazines are the perfect addition to our classroom reading library that will boost my students motivation and reading of nonfiction texts. Especially during this exciting year, which includes the Olympics and the Presidential election, my students will love reading and thinking about current events in sports, politics, science and more. Also, Weekly Reader (WR) and Time for Kids magazines support readers of different abilities; WR Grade 3 can support on grade level readers, while Time for Kids (2-3) can help struggling readers and WR Special Edition can challenge advanced students. Also, the 3-ring binders will help us keep our magazines and written responses to articles organized.

With your support, these magazines can become an integral part of our reading program. Students will look forward to their weekly arrival. You will empower my 3rd grade students not only with valuable reading skills, but also knowledge of key issues and historical events about their country and the world around them.
