I Want to Read That Book!

Help me give my students more high-interest books in our school library. Our two focus areas are graphic books (especially for younger students) and picture books that positively reflect and support the demographics of our student population.

My Project

Many of our students have yet to fall in love with books and reading. I want to offer them more high-interest books in two main areas: graphic books and representative picture books.

Students tend to choose books that they can relate to - such as a book with connections to a movie they've seen or it's a character on the front cover that looks like them.

By increasing the number of high-quality, image-positive, "easy-grab" books, I hope to get more students hooked on books and reading.

We also have a few voracious readers, and any increase in the number of books on our library shelves will give them a wider variety of things to read.

In addition, I have had several Hmong students tell me how much their parents love for them to bring home books in the Hmong language that their family can read together.

I've been (sadly) surprised at how many of our students have told me that they have no books to read at home other than their library books. Our library books serve as important mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors that enable students to better understand themselves and their world.
