Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my New York City high school students claim that they do not like to read...especially about history. My 9th grade students are mainly Latinx and of African descent. More than half of the students come from families where Spanish is their home language. We have a number of students from Caribbean and West African origin. A small percentage are of Asian and Middle Eastern descent. Most of the books they see in school are not about the history of nations and individuals from these parts of the world, so they do not feel any immediate connection to the authors or the topics of the books. I want to change this.

I would love to provide the students in my classroom a variety of non-fiction books about events and individuals in world history to whom they can feel a connection.

I want the classroom to have books that can encourage them to put down their phones and to read about the events in the world through the eyes and experiences of people who they feel are similar to them. Their understanding of world history would be so much greater if they enjoyed reading about it.

My Project

These books will become the classroom library where my 9th grade social studies students can have access to books that appeal to their personal interests. Having a classroom library full of new and interesting history and biography books will allow us to have full-class reading days, during which all students will get to read and discuss their readings with their peers. There is no better way to encourage reading among high school students than allowing them to see each other reading!

The high school students will even be encouraged to take the books home with them, with the hope that they will discuss what they are reading with their families and friends!

As the students begin to read the books, I hope they will begin to recommend specific books to their peers. I also hope they will gain more interest in the topics they learn about in world history. The best impact of this library would be hearing students discuss the books with other students and adults outside of the classroom.
