Help me show my students what good readers do. I currently teach below-level 8th graders in a high poverty middle school. While some of my students are on Special Education plans, many do not qualify for Special Education services despite their struggles to learn. They are in danger of failing multiple courses (or worse, dropping out completely) if I can not help them become better readers.

My students love it when I read aloud to them, but reading aloud to them from an age-appropriate chapter book with no pictures leaves them without something visual to focus their attention on. Most of my students need to SEE what we’re doing.

A document camera would allow them that opportunity. By placing our reading material under the lamp, the text and graphics would be projected onto our classroom screen, allowing every student in the room to see the words and follow along as I read aloud and model what good readers do.

Research shows that students who listen to an appropriate reading model will increase fluency rates, acquire bigger vocabularies, and improve their comprehension skills. By donating to this project, you will be giving my students the opportunity to experience these gains in their own lives.
