Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a high poverty neighborhood in north Philadelphia. Many of them move frequently between Philadelphia and Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. A majority of them are also English Language Learners who are fluent in Spanish. I love getting to both teach and learn from my students in both languages.

My students are fantastic readers and writers, but few of them get to read books featuring students that look like them.

I want to give them the opportunity to self-select books that reflect their own experiences, so they can see themselves as the amazing readers and writers they are.

My Project

This year my students are working hard to read as many high-quality young adult novels as they can get their hands on. Many of our novels focus on students overcoming tremendous obstacles - whether it's August Pullman from "Wonder" or Melody Brooks from "Out of My Mind." Our 5th grade team works hard to select books that feature diverse and differently abled characters - other selections include the fifth-grade classic "Maniac Magee" and "Another Kind of Hurricane," about a black boy in New Orleans and a white boy in Vermont each working through their own tragedies.

My students would jump at the chance to apply and develop their reading skills in high-interest book clubs.

I've chosen books that feature diverse narrators that reflect my students' backgrounds. Students will get to set their own reading schedules, take on concrete roles in discussions, and select which novel they'd like to read. I can't wait to see where this journey goes!
