Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Student all sitting in regular plastic chairs at regulation height desks is the opposite of how I want my classroom to look and feel. My students all have different needs and different things make them comfortable. A variety of seating options will stimulate both brain and body for my kids.

I have 25 fourth graders in a low income area of Southern Oregon.

They are wonderful kids, some of whom are struggling with difficult situations at home, as so many, too many, students do. My school is big, nearly a thousand kids from kinder to fifth grade, with a 90% free and reduced lunch population. My students love to move, they love to experiment, and they thrive when they are given the chance to feel free and safe in my classroom. I have many struggling learners and I am trying every possible option to help them learn, which includes coming to DonorsChoose to get them new, different, and exciting seating arrangements. We discount sometimes what will get students engaged in a classroom, and a classroom environment that looks the way it feels is a big step in the right direction for helping my kids be comfortable and ready to learn.

My Project

Every item on my wishlist is an alternative seating item. My class has adjusted our desks to many various heights and many of my students are standing or sitting flat on the floor on pillows from home. This is because I believe traditional seating arrangements are used more because they are easy than beneficial. I am requesting seating like bean bag chairs, Hokki Stools, and Kore WOBBLE Chairs to create more seating options. By supporting my DonorsChoose project you will be giving my students even more opportunities to learn in unique, interesting ways simply by opening their bodies up to more options. We all know the fidgeting students who have a hard time sitting still. I have specifically chosen items which are built for those kids. The Hokki Stools, WOBBLE Chairs, and teacher stool (because it's backless) will be very beneficial there. Simply by changing how they sit in class, I think we can change how they think and learn there.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom because it will be giving my students infinitely more options than they already have.

By helping fund this you'll be supporting brain research that says merely sitting in a chair all day doesn't help you think. Every classroom should be more active, and, as counter-intuitive as this sounds, these new seating choices will make the classroom more active, which will activate more learning.
