Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students reside in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country and attend a school that does not have an on-campus library. Despite these obstacles, they arrive at school each morning eager to learn from their teachers and classmates and immerse themselves in the written word. The reading students do in school is critical for providing an avenue to a brighter and more enriching life. With the gradual and regular addition of high-interest books, my classroom library fills the void created by the absence of a school library.

Hailing from El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Kosovo, Guatemala, Guyana, Guinea, Honduras, and Dominican Republic and representing languages from Spanish and French to Arabic and Albanian, my students are united in their dream of creating a prosperous future for themselves and their families.

Providing students with access to shelves of eye-catching and engaging books that reflect the diverse experiences they bring to the classroom is a key ingredient in the recipe for that future.

My Project

In the spring, students in my tenth grade English class will participate in a unit on immigration and assimilation in which they explore these processes while reflecting on their--and their family members'--experiences adapting to new countries, cities, and languages. To whet their appetites for these topics, students will have the opportunity to read books about emigration and immigration during independent reading, an activity they engage in for the first ten minutes of class every day.

Understanding that their personal history of leaving the country of their birth--perhaps while enduring the pain of separation from family and friends--in order to relocate to an unfamiliar place--where the predominant language may have been unknown to them--is reflected in literature will offer a dose of empathy while building their skills in a language that becomes less unfamiliar with each passing day.

By reading books like The Good Braider, Under the Mesquite, Laughing Without an Accent, and Outcasts United, students can lay the foundation for successful completion of the unit's project while fostering a love of reading--and an appreciation for the unique and important roles they bring to America's cultural landscape.
