Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 4th grade students are the most amazing and resilient young people. We are a community of diverse learners that come from families dealing with low-income, high poverty, and homelessness. Many students have only been in the country for a few years, and several are refugees speaking limited English. Despite the challenges we face everyday we have co-created a classroom that is a sanctuary for eager minds. We believe that diversity is our strength.

My students bring a rich tapestry of heritage and personal experience.

For many of my students their basic needs are met through school: breakfast, free/reduced lunch, access to literature and technology, social and emotional health, a friendly smile and people who care. Their families and community do their very best to provide a rich educational experience and promote a bright future for each student. My students have big dreams and bright minds, but are lacking the resources to make those dreams a reality on their own.

My Project

This chair is too hard. This chair is too soft. This chair is JUST RIGHT! Goldilocks knew the importance of finding the perfect seat and now my students and I need your help in discoverying the ideal seating option for us. Every learner is unique, so why should the seating options in the classroom be so rigid and uniform.

Sitting still in a hard plastic chair can be a difficult, it not at times impossible, task for nine and ten year-olds.

My active students learn best when they have choice in seating options and are not confined to the traditional seating of classrooms. The ability to swivel, wobble, rock, and roll will allow students to fidget while remaining focused, like sharks, on the task of learning.

Together we can create a classroom with seating options that can meet the need of each individual student, increase learning engagement, and accelerate student growth!
