My Students

When I first started teaching our classrooms each had one Apple IIe computer, one dot matrix printer and very little software (on floppy disks!). The situation has improved since, then, but not by much. Although technology has vastly improved, its availability is still limited at my school.

My students attend an inner-city urban school in one of the most densely populated cities in the United States.

It is the poorest neighborhood in the district and all of my students live far below the poverty line. But in all other respects they are typical 8 year olds - mischievous, hard-working, enthusiastic, kind, silly, hilarious and curious. They are as wonderful as third graders are all over the world, but they also struggle to have things most of us take for granted - food, transportation, clothing, technology. They are all learning English as a new language, as that is not what is spoken at home; and they are all struggling with succeeding at school and are considered 'at-risk'. Over 1/4 of my class has been identified as having some type of learning disability or other special need. But it is difficult to remember that when you meet them as they greet most days with a smile and great deal of motivation to try their hardest and 'get better at school'.

My Project

Having access to these tablets will double the amount of technology available to my students. As our 2 desktop computers are very old and unable to be updated any further, soon they will only be able to be used as word processors. Because they live far below the poverty line, most of my students do not have access to the Internet at their home. Having these tablets will enable them to do research, like finding out who invented soccer or what is the most poisonous animal on the planet - things most 8 year olds are dying to find out. And there are apps available for these tablets that can help my students practice, review, and challenge themselves, these two tablets' usefulness expands exponentially! I have students with learning disabilities that can hear books being read aloud as they track the words on the tablet. I have students with autism that can practice modulating their voice and making appropriate facial expressions. There are apps for that!

These two tablets will keep my classroom updated with new technology.

It will give access to the Internet to children who don't have it. And as I have sadly found out, they are closing the only library in our city, these tablets will give children access to hundreds of books and dozens of apps. These children need to continue to learn in a 21st century manner and having easier access to technology will do just that.
