Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students come from an under-resourced and underfunded community. We, at MLK, focus on the mental health well-being of our students. Despite their challenges the support we provide has shown how our students can be resilient. For example, they come to school everyday, with a smile on their face, and ready to learn. Our students consider our school a safe place and a space where they can be heard and encouraged. We would like to continue building on this by bringing a calming room to campus. The goal of this calming room is to equip them with social emotional skills to help them overcome challenging situations.

After the pandemic, we saw a drastic decrease in social emotional regulation and social skills.

This makes it difficult for students to focus and engage in class when they experience social problems and stressful situations. We are requesting LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box, Big Joe Stack Chair, PicassoTiles, Express Your Feelings Sensory Bottles and more. It will also provide a space for our students to learn and develop social, emotional and behavioral skills through lessons. For example the various sensory items will allow for students to reduce heightened states of emotions which will then increase their ability to reflect. The calming space will improve and support their ability to feel safe and express their emotions and thoughts. In addition, the social emotional books will help our students learn positive examples of ways to express themselves in challenging or stressful situations.

Ultimately, we want to normalize emotional regulation and healthy coping skills to build on our students’ resiliency. We believe that this calming room will be an amazing opportunity for our students to practice their skills and develop their emotional capabilities.
