My Students

I teach 6th grade in the Bronx, NY. My students are a diverse group of learners. My classes have thirty students per class with a few meeting grade-level standards, but the vast majority are struggling to make gains and to stay engaged in learning this year.

My students are enthusiastic learners but engagement is key.

They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have them this year, even from afar!

My Project

Calculators will allow my students to take charge of their learning and not get frustrated when going from window to window on their devices. During work time, students are struggling with opening up more than one window to use calculators. Currently my students are choosing to have two windows open. Sometimes, as a teacher I am not checking if they can do the calculations, but if they understand the concept. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a calculator to use. They almost always make sure the work is complete and thorough when they are able to use and even check their work with a calculator.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are allowed to use a calculator.

The scientific calculators that I have selected will help my students not have to worry about accidentally closing out their work, deleting something because they are going back and forth between windows, but more importantly the access to enable them to get more work completed. The calculators will enable them to keep them in their book bags and to use at home and in the classroom at all times.
