Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a world of black and white. That's what we've been living in through our books. Our students have been reading broken, ripped, and inadequate leveled books. So, we've made limited copies of online books, but only in monochrome. We want that to change!

Each and every year, our school has bright and ambitious students bursting through the doors and ready to enter Kindergarten!

They live in a high needs urban area with limited supplies, a small library, and a difficult family life. Many children grow up in a bilingual home and bring limited English to the classroom. School is their escape, it's their paradise. Kindergarteners' eyes brighten up with sparkles each time a book is opened and lively pictures jump off the page. Our school's budget has been dwindling each month. Teachers have been cut, supplies have been cut, and most importantly, books have been cut. We teachers have been pooling together funds to reproduce books through subscriptions online, but they lack color. And now, with these impending budget cuts, we are now forced to stop our copies, too.

My Project

It has been a dream to have students open up books that are not just full of color and life, but to also have "just right" words and concepts on each page. Kindergarteners come in developmentally at different stages, especially when it comes to literacy. With this student population, it is even more difficult to find students that come to school with vocabulary skills and letter/sound knowledge. It is with books that they are able to build up their foundational skills and potential. COLORFUL leveled books are the solution to our problems. With colors, students will be able to use context and picture clues to help them read new and complex words, which cannot be done through black and white texts. It is critical for students to read these books at school and to borrow them for rereading at home. We could also use these books in conferences, small group instruction, and of course, whole class read alouds!

We want to read.

We want to enjoy books, pictures, words, and ideas. These colorful leveled books, an interactive monster book that gets us to learn adjectives, and paper to print out even more books will foster our learning and make us lifelong lovers of reading.
