My Students

My classroom is a K-8 STEAM class for all students! Students in my classroom participate in project-based learning, career awareness and exploration, robotics, coding, green STEAM, and community problem based learning. Students are learning 21st-century skills. They learn how the world of science is constantly working around them and what their parts will be in that world someday! Many of my students come from diverse backgrounds and are learning to care about our planet. The students are starting to see how we are connected to both the natural environment and a larger community beyond our school.

I am passionate about STEAM and equity in education and try to find meaningful ways to engage my students with hands-on learning opportunities both inside the classroom and in the outdoor environment.

By providing them with experiences beyond traditional learning, my students are more willing to care about something because it relates to their lives in some way.

In my classroom, the arrangement is to set up a student-centered classroom. My students work on problem-based projects and activities that encourage them to connect to the natural environment and science.

My Project

Teaching science in the age of COVID has required some creative thinking by teachers. Science is best done when students get to practice learning by doing hands-on activities. During this time, I would like to begin an astronomy club for my students and their families.

Introducing students to a telescope and hands-on space material early on can get them interested in space and the stars for a lifetime.

With this project, students and their families would be able to check out a telescope from our school to take home and look at the night sky! Even during distant learning, we would be able to start our astronomy club that could include the whole family!
