Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a Title I school, over 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and 84% of them are second language learners. Still, our school is a Distinguished/Achieving School with an ongoing tradition of academic excellence. We believe each child is unique and deserving of a rich, educational atmosphere. I teach 6th grade, a grade level when many students are searching for peer approval while becoming more assertive and independent on the home front. This is the time when adolescence arrives. Because of this change, they need attention and praise. It's my duty to help them become responsible citizens as they get a firm foundation here in the first year of middle school. The business world uses commercials to market and sell their ideas. Did you know that U.S. product marketing exceeds one trillion dollars every year? As a matter of fact, it is the 5th largest industry in the United States. Why? Because marketing works! It sells products and ideas. I have the same mission to accomplish: to convince my 6th grade students to develop a strong sense of citizenship. Thus, I want to create commercials, which will market the ideas of problem resolution, responsible choices, personal best, knowledge, diversity, character, and self-improvement. The commercials will be written by my students and produced by creating podcasts, a product we can share with a potentially worldwide audience. Thus, our microphone inside our classroom waits patiently to take in the voices of our eager students. However, we would like to take it further. We would like to take the microphone away from the confinement of our classroom walls. Having a portable digital recorder that may be used to transfer sounds into our computer would benefit our project. So I ask, help us create podcasts that can benefit my students learn the skills of tomorrow, while making as an impact on those that listen. In addition to using the iPod as a digital recorder, it may also be used to meet the needs of today’s digital learners by extending teaching and learning beyond the normal classroom hours. The iPod has become more than just a music player, it has reinvented the way we access, create, share, and communicate knowledge. Your generosity will greatly be appreciated, thank you.
