My Students

Entrepreneurship is imperative in today's economic times. Imagine being a student learning how to turn your creative ideas into a profitable business. Now imagine you were deaf.

We are middle school and high school students that are Deaf and/or Hard of hearing.

Our program is based on functional living skills and vocational education. Along with deafness, we also have moderate cognitive delays. Most of us come from low income families. We attend a public school that is focused on 8 different art areas called majors. We are surrounded by creativity. We are not directly involved in these majors but do participate in projects with various majors at times.

My Project

We communicate using sign language. One of our favorite signs is the "I love you" hand shape. We will make a mold of our hands saying "I love you" and mount it on a wooden stand. These sculptures will be used to start a school based business. We will be learning how to take an idea and turn it into a profitable business. They will write a basic business plan, determine cost of unit sold, and market their product. Profits from the sale of items will be used to sustain the business. Any additional money will fund educational experiences.

Funding for schools is tight all over the country.

Too many times projects that will engage our students and allow them to learn "out of the box" costs more money than we have in our classroom budget. This project will give these students the skills to create some level of income for themselves. It will be difficult for these students to obtain gainful employment. Giving them this type of opportunity may help open a door to them that would never have been there before. We appreciate any help
