Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are a Title I school located in East Palo Alto. We became a K-8 Dual Immersion school in August of 2012, before that our dual immersion program existed as a choice school inside a regular SEI (Structured English Immersion) school in the my district. Until last year our enrollment was growing, this year our enrollment declined drastically due to relocating to a new site/address which added a commute for many of our families. This made it exceedingly difficult for them as many of them used to walk their children to school every morning as they do not drive, or have any form of transportation.
Our school is a dual immersion school, where our focus is to become bilingual and bi-literate learners.
It is located in a low-income community where most of our students receive free/reduced-price lunches. Often we see students in the care of grandparents or other family members, while their parents are working multiple jobs. However, I see the dedication and perseverance that our students and families have as they better develop their native language, or are working on adding a second language.
My Project
Reading is an essential skill for success in school and later in life. During kindergarten, kids develop knowledge of the world that surrounds them, through read alouds and independent reading they will learn about it. Books open doors for them as well as help them escape from stressful situations like the one we are facing.
Preparing for the in person new normal at school, we need to provide students with new and various types of books accessible for them at our classroom library.
Most of their families in our district are facing economic hardships and are not able to provide them with such educational tools as books. Kids are struggling to adapt to the new normal, and having books they love could help ease the struggle. If learning to read is like building a skyscraper, then kindergarten is the year to construct the most solid foundation possible.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
