My Students

I am a Reading Intervention Specialist for students from TK through 5th grade. In addition and because of funding, I also teach physical fitness to all of the grade levels for an hour each day. Our school is located in an industrial inner city where opportunities for outside activity are few.

My students are second language learners and come from predominantly low income families.

Many of our students don't have access to opportunities for physical fitness and health related activities. For many, the hour of physical fitness that they receive each week may be the only one they get. That is why it is important that the time be meaningful and productive.

My Project

As being the physical fitness teacher is part of my job title this year, I have learned that to teach successfully you have to have the right equipment. When teaching a grade level of almost 100 students, it is imperative that you have enough equipment so the students can fully participate in the activities.

Due to budget cuts, we are constantly low on equipment such as basketballs and soccer balls.

The students are not receiving the level of physical fitness training that they need and deserve because there is not enough equipment to go around. When students have enough equipment they will not only learn the game of soccer and basketball, they are will learn other important skills such as teamwork and problem solving skills.

I addition, the equipment needs to be age appropriate. This is important so that all students from every grade level are able to participate equally. My younger students need smaller sized basketballs and soccer balls so that they have equal access to learn the sport.
