My Students

My students begin their first day mumbling "I hate math." It's a challenge to get my students to see that we use math everyday in sports, card games, shopping, and more! Math is fun, interesting, and not always about working from a huge textbook filled with thousands of problems. Math is everywhere!

I want to make learning math more interesting and inspiring for my students who attend a low-performing inner-city public high school.

As a math teacher to over two-hundred students each year, the majority of my students begin the school year "afraid" and "bored" of math. I try to counter their negative perceptions of mathematics by inspiring students to think of mathematics as a language and a gateway to a whole new world of possibilities. For many of my students, they will be the first in their family to attend college. Most of the students at my high school are in some form of foster care or live with a single parent or relative and have not had experiences with adults who are engineers or doctors. I am a proponent of opportunities and I use my classroom to motivate students to explore the possibilities of attending college or having a career in math and science. Donors help to fill in the gap between the environmental reality of my students and what is needed to achieve.

My Project

The math workbooks, dictionaries, and hands-on activities will help my students be more involved with the math they are learning in class. My goal is to engage my students with collaborative activities, promote math language with written and oral communication of mathematics, and promote interest in real-life math with challenging math games. As a teacher for over 10 years at this same high school, I have learned that students will stretch their minds and learn higher-level concepts if they are hands-on and take ownership in their learning. These interactions and experiences are necessary to master the standards for the course.

With your donation, I can continue to provide materials that help meet my students' academic needs.

Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and I hope you find it worthwhile to help my students achieve.
