My school is in the eastern region of North Carolina, tucked inside the inner banks. We have a culture rich in history as Washington was the original town named for the president and Blackbeard the pirate used to call our county home.
My school children are from primarily low-socioeconomic and rural backgrounds.
We only have grades 2 and 3 at our school and we have approximately 550 students. My students are inquisitive and fun--always ready for an adventure and learning. They love music and being able to sing and play instruments. Most of my students do not have wide exposure to music and the arts in our community. Concerts and events usually require at least a 45 minute drive--so I challenge myself to bring a variety of musical experiences to my students.
My Project
My students love to perform in class and on the stage for assemblies. They love the challenge of picking up a new instrument and learning to play, and I love watching the pride on their faces as they master a new skill in my class.
The ukulele is a small and manageable stringed instrument for 2nd and 3rd grade students.
Many of my students are still very small and will not be intimidated by the size of the ukulele. The students will be able to quickly master chords and notes and will be able to play songs to accompany their own voices. Additionally, we can pair these instruments with percussion instruments we already have in our classroom to make exciting musical arrangements of songs we are working on in class.
