My Students

Our students come from impoverished home environments, where enriching experiences are not commonplace. They are eager for learning opportunities that will positively impact their young lives. A field trip that encompasses physical movement with physical science would be a great learning experience!

My school is located in Los Angeles County and is designated as Title I.

One half of my class are English Language Learners, the other half are redesignated English Language Learners. They receive free breakfasts and lunches daily, and the majority reside in nearby apartments. The community of parents is caring and eager to help their children be successful at school. However, many of our children come from homes where there is only one parent as the caretaker and provider. This leaves little time or financial resources for enriching their children's lives. Our students include gifted children as well as those with learning disorders such as dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder. Whatever their special gifts and abilities, they all would benefit from an experience such as this. This field trip would enrich the lives of three second grade classes for 72 students.

My Project

A field trip is an everlasting resource because although it is not a consumable so to speak, it forever shapes and molds a child's imagination, hopes and dreams. This memorable experience becomes even more so when the children come from homes where they do not get opportunities to visit a place like the Kidspace Museum. The museum provides exhibits and educational programs that engage students in the arts, humanities and science. The main activity we would be involved in during our visit is one that uses physical movement with props such as enormous balls, ropes, magnets and other scientific equipment to experiment with the principles of force. Our students will engage in large scale interactive experiments and get physical as they apply the concepts behind physics. This would be the highlight of the visit to the museum as our students would also have the opportunity to "unleash an earthquake", "feed giant bugs","craft art through nature", and "climb raindrops 40 ft. into the air".

I Like To Move It, Move It!

Corresponds to the CA. State Science Standard for 2nd grade which is "Balance And Motion" for physical science. Prior to our field trip students will be participating in our curricular science program - Foss Science Resources, where they will gain knowledge and understanding of the way things move. It would be a great culminating activity for them to have at the Kidspace Museum where they would physically engage the concepts they have learned about in the classroom.
