Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a 4th - 8th grade special education class. My class is self-contained, so my students are with my for all academic subjects. My students have a wide range of disabilities, including mental retardation, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and learning disabilities. Our school is located in a violent and chaotic neighborhood. The school is very old and falling apart in many places.

At the beginning of the year, I asked my students what there favorite subject in school was. Many students said science. When I asked them why science was their favorite subject, the response I got was "Wait...what's science?" They have heard the term science, but have never had the opportunity to explore and learn about the world outside of their neighborhood. As a special needs classroom, we are not given resources to work with like the other classes. The science books at the school are written at a level that is much too complicated for my students. They have shown a strong passion for learning about the earth and all the different places and people.

With the proper resources, the students in my class can explore and learn about all the things in the world that have been hidden from them in the past. With books written at their level that have lots of pictures, they can learn about the same things that their non-disabled peers are learning about. They are very curious and able to remember a lot of information when they get to explore something new and interesting.

With your generous donation, my students will be able to explore the world outside of their sheltered community. These books and materials will be able to meet the students at their level, and then raise them to a new level of awareness and enrichment.
