My Students

What a year this has been. I moved into 1st grade to teach this year, and I want to have a classroom library filled with appropriately leveled books for my first graders. I would love a large variety of texts on different levels, topics, and genres so that students have plenty of choices. We haven't been able to hold books in our hands because of the pandemic. Finally we are in school every day, it is way overdue, and we NEED books that we can hold onto and read.

"There is no substitute for books in the life of a child." — May Ellen Chase.

Our Title I school community is a diverse mix of Guyanese, African American, Caribbean, Asian and Hispanic families. We are a PreK-5th grade school in Queens, NY. We believe that all students can meet high standards of excellence, as well as develop social and creative skills through a cooperative effort of the teachers, administration, families, and community.

My Project

After being blended students for so long, every other day in school and then on line, most of my students have been glued to their tablets many days without being able to hold a book. Having more books in our classroom library will allow my students to not only have more of a variety of books to choose from, but also they will be able to take books home to read safely.

My students will use these exciting and entertaining resources to practice their phonetic and sight word reading skills.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student reading habits and choices, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
