My Students

My students come from all walks of life. This year I have 17 students in my class. Some come from very supportive families that are well off, and some come from very poor families who don't have the right resources at home to help their student learn. I also have special education inclusion classroom.

My students help create a loving environment for each other as they learn.

Each student holds a special place in my heart. My classroom is a community of learners that supports one another in every way that they can.

My Project

As a first grade teacher, I am continually working on foundational reading skills with every one of my students. However, everyone learns at their own pace. I am required to evaluate my students' reading levels on a quarterly basis in order to track their progress. The Developmental Reading Assessment kit will help me test their reading and accurately form guided reading groups so that I can be the best teacher I can be for my students.

As my students' reading levels change, I want to be able to assess and grow with them.

This kit will help me form groups that need to work on similar strategies in order to become better readers. The kit contains books from 40 different reading levels that rise incremental difficulty levels. DRA emphasizes setting instructional goals specific to each child. The texts in this kit are appropriate to measure the instructional goals and objectives set forth by our school system. After using this kit I would be able to recognize and adjust instruction based on developmentally appropriate reading levels. Within a full year of using this kit, I would expect to see improvement in my students' reading level as a result of being better able to adjust instruction to specific needs. As I continue to assess reading levels, I can continually adjust my guided reading groups so that I can work on new strategies with my students. I can also get leveled books that are specifically correlated to the level that they were assessed on. This kit would drastically change my reading program.
