My Students

This is my fifth year teaching in a New York City public school. I am a special education teacher in a 3rd-4th grade self-contained bridge classroom.

I made it a priority as I started my career as a teacher that even though I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I know I can certainly control their POSITIVE experiences during the school day in a creative and positive way.

My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous. As a teacher in a title one school, my students are faced with various situations both in and out of the classroom. Half of my students are being raised in a single parent household and receive free/reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. My school is a comprised of a good percentage of students with IEP’s and students who are English Language Learners. Even though these things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us take for granted. Despite the many situations they face, from the minute my students walk in the door of my classroom, I center on their innocence, growth and positivity.

My Project

My 3rd and 4th graders love to read and learn. Books allow them to learn through reading. The feeling of a book in your hands should be a feeling every child gets to experience.

I believe independence and making the right choice are important to my students in my classroom.

The leveled books in this project will allow all my students to locate books on their level to improve and get better in reading. I want to provide them with different books to browse from. Some students aren’t able to buy books, get to go to the library or even own a tablet to read a book online. I want to deliver my students with a variety of authors and give them the chance to enjoy reading as I experienced reading while growing up.

My students get so excited when I add a new book I’ve bought from my personal pocket. Envision their eyes when they see new books donated from my friends and family.

Your donations will support not only our classroom library, but also the students that it helps. Keeping our library updated and interesting to all of the readers in my classroom will help keep them on the path to becoming not only lifelong readers, but also lifelong learners.
