My Students

I work in an inner city school that is home to our district's SAIL program for children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our school is a Pre K-Grade 6 school where 48% of our students do not have English as a first language. 34% are students with disabilities and 84% are high needs. I teach in a sub-separate classroom. The degree of my students' disorders makes it impossible for them to be included in a general classroom setting.

My students require a highly modified curriculum, smaller class size, help with sensory regulation and a lower student/teacher ratio in order to be successful learners.

Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, English and history without many of the requisite tools to teach our students.

My students are 11 of the most creative , adventurous and funniest children I have had the pleasure of teaching. They all learn and grow in different ways through highly individualized instruction.

My Project

The central focus of classroom time should be on teaching and learning. Without an organized, consistent environment, there is too much time spent off task trying to locate lessons and materials that I have adapted and modified depending on each of my students' specific needs. Working with children who each need modified, individualized instruction can be an organizational nightmare.

In order to prioritize instruction and student learning in my classroom, I need a Portfolio Storage With 12 Translucent Trays, pocket portfolios, and manilla file folders to keep all my students' work organized and readily available at all times.

The Wood Designs Tip-Me-Not Portfolio Storage With 12 Translucent Trays has divided storage areas on the top and below there are 12 clear trays where student work can be placed for each of my students. It is tip resistant and has rounded edges for safety, something that is important in my classroom. The two sided pocket charts will hold additional work, as I spend after school hours creating a week's (or more) worth of lessons for each student. These will be kept separate from the bins so as not to confuse my students and can be placed in each bin at the end of each day.

My students need to spend classroom time engaged and learning. This system that I am requesting will ensure that they all get the instruction they need to be successful learners.
